Many people use this area for day-only skiing, tobogganing, etc, and the parking lot fills up fast, hence the early starting time. Late comers may have to park miles down the road, where other trails may be taken. Our outing will take the trail from the dead-end parking lot to the BOWL AREA. Mt Pinos is 8826 feet in elevation; most of the skiing is above 8000 feet. HOW TO GET THERE The total mileage is approx 90 miles from the South Bay Area. Head north along highway 5 towards Bakersfield, pass Gorman, and in a few miles take the Frazier Park turn-off. Mt Pinos is west of Frazier Park, and it's approx 20 miles to the road end. The driving time should be about two hours from the South Bay to Pinos. SKI RENTALS Skis, boots, and poles, all cross-country type, can be rented at many places in the South Bay, ie REI, Pat's, Hostelhaus, etc. They can also be rented on the way from FRAZIER SKI & PACK for $9.00 a set, which I find most convenient. They are located thusly: After the Frazier turnoff from the freeway, go three miles to the flashing yellow light, turn right, then turn left, they are on the left side at 3620 Mt. Pinos Way. Call (805-245-3438) or for recorded info call 805-245-3050. If you plan on getting your equipment here, I suggest adding a half-hour to your travel time. WEATHER and DRIVING CONDITIONS - CHAINS ARE REQUIRED!!! Chains were required by the Highway Patrol for entry into the Pinos area this past weekend. Skiing was reported to be excellent, and more snow is expected during the week. If in doubt about the conditions, call the leaders, or the Frazier Park Ranger at 805-245-3731. Bad weather will cancel this outing. RESERVATIONS & CARPOOLS Trip reservations are NOT required, however, I would like to have an idea of whoall is going, so please contact me or Jack if you do plan to go.
