The Mt Pinos area is open to the public and no permits are required for entry. Many people use this area for day-only skiing, tobogganing, etc, and the parking lot fills up fast, hence the early starting time. Late comers may have to park miles down the road, where other trails may be taken. Our outing will take the trail from the dead-end parking lot to the BOWL AREA. Mt Pinos is 8826 feet in elevation; most of the skiing is above 8000 feet. HOW TO GET THERE Drive approx 100 miles north from the South Bay Area along highway 5 towards Bakersfield. Pass Gorman, and in a few miles take the Frazier Park turn-off. Mt Pinos is west of Frazier Park, and it's approx 15 miles to the road end. The driving time should be about two hours from the South Bay to Pinos. SKI RENTALS Skis, boots, and poles, all cross-country type, can be rented at many places in the South Bay, ie REI, Pat's, Hostelhaus, etc. They can also be rented on the way from FRAZIER SKI & PACK for $9.00 a set, which I find most convenient. They are located a few hundred yards from the Frazier Park off-ramp (805-245-3438). If you plan on getting your equipment here, I suggest adding a half-hour to your travel time. WEATHER The chances for bad weather are slim, but THE TRIP WILL BE CANCELLED IN CASE OF BAD WEATHER!! Call if in doubt. The daytime temperature has been around 40 deg F., and it can be quite warm if the sun is out and there is no wind. HOWEVER, it can also be very cold without sun, so dress for winter conditions. DRIVING CONDITIONS The road to Mt Pinos should be perfectly clear of snow , however, the whole area can get many feet of snow in a storm, and the carrying of tire chains is recommended. RESERVATIONS & CARPOOLS Trip reservations are NOT required, however, I would like to have an idea of whoall is going, so please contact me if you do plan to go. I will coordinate carpooling; so contact me if you can drive someone, or need a ride. OTHER EQUIPMENT Required are: Winter clothing such as parka, sweater, gloves, warm hat, heavy socks, etc. Also required are sun glasses or goggles, sunscreen, quart of water minimun, lunch, and the remainder of the 10 essentials. Recommended are: gaiters, tissue paper, camera, clothing change in the car. CONTACT: Ed Keller wk: 615-2033 hm: 542-2044 or Jack Cook wk: 536-5214 hm: 371-2706 Ed
